Early Surgical Abortion

A first trimester abortion is considered to be an “early surgical abortion”.

An early surgical abortion procedure is performed by vacuum aspiration on pregnancies up to detection of fetal heartbeat.

The abortion procedure involves removing the pregnancy by vacuum aspiration, the most widely used and safest method of abortion.

You should be able to return to normal, non-strenuous activities the following day. We are available 24/7 for emergencies.

A 2-3 hour outpatient stay at our office can be anticipated.

What to expect during your visit

At Greenville Women’s Clinic, your pregnancy length will be confirmed by an in-office ultrasound before your abortion procedure. This helps our medical team determine how far along you are and which abortion care options are available to you.

For an early surgical abortion, patients may have the procedure while awake with local anesthesia or asleep with intravenous anesthesia for a pain-free experience. Our staff will explain your options, answer your questions, and help you feel informed and supported before care begins.

Patients who choose asleep anesthesia must bring a responsible adult to help them get home safely after the appointment. You will not be able to drive, work, or make important decisions for 24 hours after receiving intravenous medication.

Counseling

Counseling is included in the procedure fee and will help a woman explore her feelings regarding her pregnancy and the alternatives available to her. Counselors discuss birth control, post-operative care, and the abortion procedure.

All contraceptive methods are provided by licensed medical professionals following a consultation to determine the best option for each patient.

Special Instructions

Patients under 17 years of age will need 1 parents consent. Parent will need to bring their ID along with the patient's ID or birth certificate
All patients must bring a picture ID
On the morning of your appointment, take a thorough shower, wear a dress or a skirt, or loose fitting pants
You must have someone accompany you to the Clinic to drive you home after in-clinic abortion
Please do not bring children to the clinic
Do not drink or chew anything after midnight before an in-clinic abortion
You may eat or drink before the medical abortion

According to South Carolina Law you MUST review Women's Right to Know material at least 24 Hours prior to your abortion, if you are thinking about having an abortion.
